Conceptual closure. How memories are woven into an interconnected worldview.
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper describes a tentative model for how discrete memories transform into an interconnected conceptual network, or worldview, wherein relationships between memories are forged by way of abstractions. The model draws on Kauffman's theory of how an information-evolving system can emerge through the formation and closure of an autocatalytic network. Here, the information units are not catalytic molecules, but memories and abstractions, and the process that connects them is not catalysis but reminding events (i.e., one memory evokes another). The result is a worldview that both structures, and is structured by, self-triggered streams of thought.

Liane Gabora Amplifying Phenomenal Information
Fundamental approaches bypass the problem of getting consciousness from non-conscious components by positing that consciousness is a universal primitive. For example, the double aspect theory of information holds that information has a phenomenal aspect. How then do you get from phenomenal information to human consciousness? This paper proposes that an entity is conscious to the extent it ampli...
متن کاملIdeas are Not Replicators but Interrelated Networks of them Are
An idea is not a replicator because it does not consist of coded self-assembly instructions. It may retain structure as it passes from one individual to another, but does not replicate it. The cultural replicator is not an idea but an associatively-structured network of them that together form an internal model of the world, or worldview. A worldview is a primitive, uncoded replicator, like the...

متن کاملModeling storage and retrieval of memories in the brain
We have proposed a neural network model that stores the incoming information after orthogonalizing it in the same manner as vectors are orthogonalized. The scheme enables the brain to compare a new informational system with those in the memory and store its similarities and differences with the old memories in an economical manner. This allows the brain to have an enormous capacity and yet the ...
متن کاملClosure of autobiographical memories: The effects of written recounting from first- or third-person visual perspective.
Autobiographical memories are recalled with varying degrees of psychological closure. Closure is a subjective assessment of how far a remembered experience feels resolved, and it has been suggested that one predictor of closure is the amount of emotional detail in the memory. Study 1 examined which aspect of emotional detail is important for closure, and showed that open and closed negative mem...
